Information on Counselling with EGFR+ UK

EGFR+ UK offer funded, one-to-one counselling to those affected by EGFR-mutated lung cancer. Counselling support is an opportunity to share your thoughts and feelings with an experienced therapist who will listen without judgement, whether you are the person with a lung cancer diagnosis or you are supporting a loved one through their experience. We can connect you with qualified, experienced counsellors who can provide you with confidential support and advice on coping with your diagnosis, treatment, and life with cancer.

Scope of Counselling Offer

Before engaging in formal counselling, consider joining our active online peer support group via Facebook. Our online community offers the opportunity for those living with EGFR+ lung cancer (and their loved ones) to exchange knowledge and social support with their peers who share similar experiences

Counselling is offered to all those based in the UK who are affected by EGFR+ lung cancer, including patients and the significant people in their lives. Counselling is intended to support people with the difficulties they encounter as a result of a lung cancer diagnosis and will be offered after assessment with their chosen counsellor..

EGFR+UK can fund up to six appointments by phone or Zoom. If a member wishes to continue with counselling after this initial funded block of sessions, they may arrange this on a self-funded basis with their counsellor.

Participants will be offered a choice of counsellors, including (where possible) male and female counsellors, to help accommodate personal preferences.

Counsellors cannot provide emergency support for patients or loved ones in crisis. If you (or a loved one) are feeling overwhelmed or at breaking point, please seek help immediately using the resources listed on the EGFR+UK https://www.egfrpositive.org.uk/crisis-support

Accessing Counselling

Patients or loved ones should approach a Trustee of EGFR+ UK to apply to access counselling. Regional ambassadors can refer members of their regional groups to a Trustee (with their consent) to request access to counselling.

Enquires about accessing counselling should be directed to: membersupport@egfrpositive.org.uk or contact@egfrpositive.org.uk

Once access to counselling has been approved by a Trustee, patients or loved ones will be issued with information about our approved counsellors and provided with their contact details. It is the responsibility of the person requesting counselling to choose an individual counsellor and to make contact with them to arrange an appointment.

Six sessions will be fully funded by EGFR+ UK. Cancellation at short notice will incur a cancellation fee of £25.

Counsellor Autonomy and Client Relationship

The role of EGFR+UK is to enable access to registered counselling practitioners. The therapeutic relationship and the contract governing it are established directly between the counsellor and the client. Counsellors operate with professional autonomy and are responsible for adhering to their ethical guidelines and the terms of their agreement with the client. EGFR+UK does not oversee or manage the specifics of this contractual relationship.
